Less-than-truckload surges as driver shortage bites

The last four months has seen a decline in full truckload shipments in the UK, and a corresponding increase in less-than-truckload shipments, according to the FourKites visibility platform.

The proportion of full truckloads loads in the UK has decreased by between 5-15% in the past four months, while LTL loads have increased by 10-20%, it says.

FourKites adds that the shift may be caused by a shortage of drivers or the ongoing fuel crisis.

According to Clecat figures, says FourKites, there is a shortfall of more than 400.000 drivers across Europe including UK 76.000 in the UK. The UK situation has been exacerbated by Brexit, because foreign drivers now need to get work permits and visas.

FourKites says that shippers and carriers, Faced with the shortage of capacity, may be switching to LTL to save money and to use all free space in trailers.

However, consolidation of goods requires better planning which can be aided by FourKites’ real-time visibility platform and appointment manager solution, says the software company.
