Lidl plans own shipping line to beat capacity crunch
[ April 7, 2022 // Chris ]German retailer Lidl says it is planning to set up its own shipping line and purchase its own vessels to beat the current shortage of capacity on global container routes. Lidl, which is part of the Schwarz Group, has registered Tailwind Shipping Lines with the European Trademark Office, saying it plans to operate cargo transportation; cargo ship transport; air cargo and handling services. There has been no reports yet on how many or what type of ships the retailer plans to acquire. The retailer is believed to have a container volume of around 500teu a week. Other retailers have chartered vessels, most breakbulk, to move containers, as have a number of freight forwarders.
