Logistics UK welcomes grace period for NI SPS checks
[ March 3, 2021 // Chris ]Logistics UK’s policy manager for Northern Ireland, Seamus Leheny has welcomed the government’s announcement that it would extend the grace periods relating to border checks on SPS agri-food goods, originally set to expire after 31 March.
He said: “We are pleased the government listened to the advice we shared with Rt Hon Michael Gove MP and European Commission vice president Maroš Šefčovič at a recent roundtable meeting.”
The decision would give time to plan and deliver a permanent scheme that will reduce friction on SPS goods, such as a Trusted Trader Scheme, he said.
However Šefčovič said the UK government’s action violated the Northern Ireland Protocol agreed as part of the Brexit deal.
