Lufthansa takes staged approach to Frankfurt upgrade
[ January 21, 2021 // Chris ]Lufthansa’s supervisory board has approved investment in its main cargo hub at Frankfurt, on a modular basis. Modernisation of the Lufthansa Cargo Center has already begun in January 2021 and is due to be completed in 2028.
Digitalisation, new product requirements and the increasing importance of e-commerce have changed the demands on the logistics centre. In the first step of the programme, construction of a central high-rack storage system is currently in progress. In addition to new buildings, existing building sections and warehouses are also being modernised as part of the eight-year infrastructure project.
Lufthansa Cargo chief operations officer Harald Gloy said: “The holistically planned upgrading of the building infrastructure in combination with improvements to the logistics system and internal material flows will further increase the handling speed of shipments as well as the service quality for all Lufthansa Cargo customers.”
Frankfurt handles around 80% of Lufthansa Cargo’s global freight volume.
