Maersk goes forward with digital contract
[ January 24, 2018 // Chris ]Maersk Line has become a founder investor in the New York Shipping Exchange (NYSHEX), described as the first digital forward freight contract for the global container industry.
The new contract is also being offered by Hapag Lloyd, CMA CGM, MOL, OOCL, and COSCO, representing a combined 52% of global container capacity with member carriers now representing all three major alliances: 2M, Ocean Alliance and THE Alliance.
Maersk says the new platform will allow customers to agree and control their costs upfront, with a commitment from the carrier to carry their shipment. Maersk Line will begin piloting the concept in its transpacific export agriculture market from the US to Asia in March.
