Maersk saves carbon with the Halifax

Maersk has completed the world’s first conversion of a large containership to dual-configuration, able to operate on methanol or conventional fuel. The retrofit operation on the Maersk Halifax was carried out by Zhoushan Xinya Shipyard in China in 88 days and with the engine conversion carried out by MAN Energy Solutions.

The length of the ship was extended by 15 meters to 368 meters partly to accommodate new fuel tanks but also, increasing the capacity from around 15,000 to 15,690 TEU.

Maersk Halifax is one of 11 vessels in Maersk’s Hong Kong-class.
