Maersk splits Panama Canal service
[ January 10, 2024 // Chris Lewis ]Maersk is switching from vessels to a land bridge to avoid the Panama Canal on its OC1 service between Oceania and the Americas. This is due to the water situation, which has forced the Panama Canal Authority to reduce the number and weight of vessels passing through the waterway.
The service will be split into two loops, separated by an 80km rail link. Pacific vessels will turn at Balboa, Panama, dropping off cargo heading for Latin America and North America and picking up cargo heading for Australia and New Zealand. Atlantic vessels will turn at Manzanillo, also in Panama, dropping off cargo heading for Australia and New Zealand and picking up cargo heading for Latin and North America.
