Malta Freeport gets green light for expansion

Malta Freeport Terminals has signed an agreement with the island state’s government to carry out its first terminal expansion in two decades.
The project will extend the north quay of Terminal 2 by 176 metres and the west quay by 195m, allowing the port to handle the largest containerships of around 23,000teu.
Jointly announcing the agreement, minister for the economy, EU funds and Land, Silvio Schembri and Malta Freeport Terminals Alex Montebello said: “The Terminal 2 extension – which requires and investment of €89 million and will take two years to complete – will consolidate our reputation as a leading transhipment hub in the Mediterranean.”
The Freeport said it has already invested €320m in machinery and acquipment, including two megamax quay cranes capable of handling the largest ships as ell as IT systems.
The Freeport serves 120 ports worldwide, including 50 in the Med and handles almost 3m teu a year.
