Medlog, the Swiss-based logistics arm of Mediterranean Shipping Company has acquired UK based terminal and transport operator Maritime Group.

Maritime’s current management team, headed by executive chairman John Williams, will remain with the business and continue to run the Company, uninterrupted, with new investment support from MEDLOG, under the ‘Maritime’ brand.

Maritime provides road and rail freight logistics, including container transport and storage, domestic distribution, freight management and truck sales. Established in 2001 by John Williams, it currently has 41 sites, including a network of rail freight terminals and employs 3,000 people, 1,600 trucks, and over 50container handlers.

John Williams, commented: “We are really pleased to have secured the long-term future of the business as part of an independent, global logistics organisation capable of providing the continued investment to help us with our exciting plans to develop the Company for all our stakeholders. We will continue to develop practical, technology-driven, infrastructure-led, supply chain solutions and setting a high bar for service performance in the UK with new battery electric trucks on order and our rail terminals operating on an open access basis for existing and new customers.”

Medlog chairman, Giuseppe Prudent, added: “We are delighted to be expanding our logistics footprint in the United Kingdom. Medlog specialises in intermodal transportation, providing solutions in more than 80 countries. The wealth of knowledge within Maritime, coupled with the investment and expertise from Medlog, will power continued innovation into the UK’s logistics infrastructure for the future, in a manner that’s aligned with our values and the respect we hold for the environment.”

Maritime Transport has meanwhile completed a new container storage terminal at the Port of Liverpool. It will allow it to expand its operations in Liverpool, and will operate 24 hours with capacity for up to 2,000 TEU.

The site also features reefer plugin points, devanning services, comprehensive security and a vehicle fleet for first and final mile transport.

The terminal has two new SANY H9 reach stackers operating on site that reduce fuel consumption by 20%.

As part of the project, Maritime is expanding its existing transport depot within the port from four acres to 11.4 and a new two-storey building currently under construction will offer showers, kitchenettes, meeting rooms, driver lounges and office spaces.

Deputy chief executive officer, Tom Williams, said:‘This expansion increases our capacity and provides new, modern facilities for our drivers and operational teams. It’s an excellent addition to our network that will undoubtedly strengthen our service capabilities, and accommodate the growing volume of cargo activity at the port following the introduction of MSC’s Britannia service.”

Maritime operates dedicated container storage sites in Ipswich, Northampton, Liverpool, and Southampton, in addition to eight open-access, multi-user rail freight terminals in Tamworth, Birmingham, Manchester, Wakefield, Northampton, Mossend, Tilbury, and East Midlands Gateway.
