Methanol ship makes UK debut

[ September 28, 2023   //   ]

Port of London’s London Gateway terminal has handled the world’s first methanol-fuelled container vessel.

The 2,100tey Laura Maersk made her maiden call on 27 September on the Baltic shipping route between Northern Europe and the Bay of Bothnia.

The containers were discharged and delivered to their brand-new, more sustainably built warehouse, moving via rail in partnership with Maritime Transport. The final mile was carried out using an electric HGV – the first of its kind operated in the UK.

Later, the vessel called in Felixstowe. Executive director of Hutchison Ports and Port of Felixstowe chief executive, Clemence Cheng, said all Felixstowe’s electricity already comes from certified renewable sources and it was investing in new electric trucks and yard cranes, adding: “By deploying the first of the 150 electric trucks we have on order to work on the Laura Maersk we are able to demonstrate how zero-emission journeys through the port are possible.”
