More ships for Maersk

[ July 9, 2015   //   ]

Maersk Line has signed a US$1.1 billion contract with Hyundai Heavy Industries for nine 14,000teu ships, plus an option for a further eight. They have a much more flexible operational profile than previous designs. By moving away from hulls designed with a certain speed and draft in mind, they can be deployed on East-West or North-South trades where requirements differ, with no impact on fuel consumption. They will join the fleet in 2017.

Earlier, Maersk Line signed a contract with Daewoo Shipbuilding for 11 second generation Triple-E 19,630teu container vessels, plus an option for a further six on 2 June. The new vessels will be the largest in Maersk Line’s fleet and are intended for the Asia-Europe service, joining the fleet between April 2017 and May 2018.
