North to south in support of seafarers

[ May 30, 2022   //   ]

Veteran shipping and logistics journalist Mike King is hoping to raise $15,000 for International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN) by hiking 200 miles along the Offa’s Dyke path from South to North Wales.

His motivation for the ten mile trek is the poor treatment of many ships crews who have been stranded on board ships for over a year, unable to get Covid vaccines.

He added: “And now we’ve got the war in Ukraine which has trapped hundreds more seafarers in the Black Sea. Again, they are the forgotten victims,” he said. “I’m hoping some of the ship owners and managers or other people in the logistics world I’ve interviewed over the years might help support this fundraiser.”

Some of the funds will also go towards ISWAN’s Ukraine Crisis Support Fund which gives small grants to seafarers and their families of any nationality who have been impacted by the Ukraine crisis and need immediate and urgent financial support.”

Mike will be joined on the hike by childhood friend Norman Long. The two will carry all their kit with them and pay all their own costs.
