P&O Ferries to quit Liverpool-Dublin route

[ August 22, 2023   //   ]

P&O Ferries is to exit the Liverpool-Dublin route, saying that its current P berth in Liverpool is no longer available to it in 2024 and negotiations to extend the lease or find an alternative have been unsuccessful.

The operator will continue to run the Cairnryan-Larne route.

The two vessels currently serving the Liverpool-Dublin route will be redeployed elsewhere on the P&O Ferries route network in the coming months.

In a statement, the line said: “Unfortunately, despite utmost efforts by P&O Ferries to find a viable solution, no suitable alternative has been offered that would enable us to maintain the current service into 2024. We are saddened by our forced withdrawal from this route, which will reduce competition and the choice of sailings available to customers on a crossing where there is currently only one alternative operator.”

The route offers 24 sailings a week, mainly serving the freight market.

P&O Ferries said it was now beginning a consultation process with employees and will offer support to find alternative employment the business, or where that is not possible, elsewhere.

It said it had also worked to ensure that where possible our customers affected by the intended closure of the Liverpool-Dublin route can access alternative services with other operators.

Seatruck Ferries, now part of CLdN, offers an alternative service between Dublin and Liverpool.
