Ports are hubs for the future, says survey

[ May 18, 2018   //   ]

Ports could turn themselves into hubs for wider economic activity such as logistics and manufacturing with more customer-specific services, according to a member survey by the UK Major Ports Group (UKMPG) published on 18 May.

Part of the UKMPG’s response to the Government’s Maritime 2050 Call for Evidence which closed that week, it also saw an ongoing shift to multi-modal transport. Assets and buildings would in future be more flexible and there would be large-scale value-added activities in ports, said respondents.

It also foresaw ports becoming data platforms through port community systems or advanced inventory systems. New technology such as Machine Learning or Blockchain could revolutionise operations.

Ports could also become power stations while electric vehicles and other technology could cut emissions.
