Ports could lose out to housing in future planning system, warns UKMPG
[ October 20, 2020 // Chris ]The Government is putting housing considerations above commercial ones such as ports in its latest planning proposals, says an industry group.
The UK Major Ports Group (UKMPG) said, in a briefing paper on the Government’s proposed sweeping changes to the planning system in England, published in partnership with planning specialists Adams Hendry, that the industry is concerned about the overwhelming focus on housing and the lack of consideration of economic activity in the Planning for the Future White Paper.
UKMPG chief executive Tim Morris said: “We all need somewhere to live. But a lot of people also need to earn a living – or rely on someone who does…The risk is that economic activity, particularly ports with a national or regional role, will not have sufficient recognition within a new streamlined, housing focused approach.”
However, UKMPG did welcome the more streamlined approvals process for developments.
