Ports of Normandy thinks electric
[ April 17, 2023 // Chris Lewis ]With electrical connections due to become obligatory for some types of ships from 2030, Port of Normandy is planning to offer this service to ferry and cruise operators from 2027 in its three ports.
The European Commission has presented a package of legislative proposals aimed at achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and the obligation to provide electrical connections for ships in port forms part of this.
Ports of Normandy says it has taken the lead in this respect by signing, in October 2021, a partnership with French electricity company EDF a roadmap to achieve this. A first study has already been realised including a list of the terminals subject to the obligations, a feasibility study for the electrical connections and to estimate the power needs and associated costs.
Following this study, the ports senior management gave the green light for the project on 13 April, with a €900,000 for technical studies.
These include the dedicated ferry berths 2, 4 and 6 at the port of Cherbourg, the ferry berth at the port of Caen-Ouistreham and the berth at the port of Dieppe, as well as cruise berths.
Normandy regional president and president of the ports of Normandy, Herve Morin said work would start in 2024 and would be completed in 2027.
