Portsmouth protest
[ October 15, 2012 // Chris ]The RMT seafarers’ union held protests in Portsmouth – as part of a worldwide series of actions by the trade union movement – over pay and conditions for workers at Channel Islands shipping firm Condor Ferries on 12 October. It claimed that the company was exploiting overseas workers. However, in a statement, Condor said: ‘We do not agree with their point of view. Condor Ferries is a diligent and concerned employer and we take care that all our employees are trained to the highest standards, work in safe conditions and receive competitive wages. Shipping is quite naturally a global industry with a highly sought-after and mobile workforce. It is important to understand that the same systems do not apply to the international shipping industry and domestic employment situations.”
