Product safety rules for NI trade from 13 December
[ December 10, 2024 // Chris Lewis ]The EU Regulation on General Product Safety (GPSR) could affect some GB businesses selling goods in Northern Ireland. From 13 December, says the Road Haulage Association. GPSR introduces some new requirements on traceability which means that businesses selling from GB into the EU and into Northern Ireland will need a compliance point of contact or “responsible economic operator” for product safety. Products will have to be traceable, for example, through a batch or serial number, visible to consumers. Online businesses will also have to verify compliance with GPSR requirements.
GPSR does not apply to food, plants and animals, animal by-products, products for plant protection, and products marked for repair or reconditioning.
RHA had earlier in the year written to the NI secretary of State to discuss these issues and to offer recommendations. There were concern about divergence and the hurdles businesses must go through to send a range of goods from GB to NI.
