Rail or barge now available at most DP World terminals
[ May 23, 2022 // Chris ]Terminal and ports operator DP World says it can now offer rail or barge services at 95% of its European locations.
DP World, which operates 20 terminals in 12 countries across the continent, recently invested in rail infrastructure in Turkey and the UK and has upgraded services in Rotterdam and Antwerp.
It says that barges can move a ton of cargo 647 miles with a single gallon of fuel, trains 477 miles but trucks only 145 miles.
The rail hub at Antwerp Gateway can handle six trains simultaneously, and the port is also connected to the 1,500km-long Belgian waterway network and to the pan-European river and canal system. Some 35% of all cargo to and from the gateway is transported by barge.
At nearby Rotterdam World Gateway, 65% of the hinterland containers continue their journey to their destination via inland shipping and trains.
In the UK, DP World’s London Gateway and Southampton are the only ports in the country that can handle the country’s longest freight trains of 775m. At Southampton, 30% of cargo is transported by rail – the highest rate in the UK – with London Gateway aiming for similar levels
DP World Constanta – on the south coast of Romania – is the only one in the country with rail and barge onsite. It has a barge connection to Braila – a river island near the Ukrainian and Moldovan border – and it a three-line rail terminal, each capable of handling three complete 30 wagon trains at one time.
DP World has recently invested heavily in rail services at DP World Yarimca, Turkey, which offers connections to the Middle East and Asia.
