Rock around the dock
[ September 5, 2024 // Chris Lewis ]Musician turned painter Udo Lindenberg has presented a vast panoramic painting of the port of Hamburg to shipping line Hapag-Lloyd.
Lindenburg, whose half century musical career encompassed hits such as Sonderzug nach Pankow (Special train to Pankow) and Hoch im Norden (High in the North) also included several brushes with the leadership of the former East Germany.
The artist himself described the painting: (somewhat gnomically, maybe something has been lost in translation): “A bright panopticon of Udo figures is brought together with Hamburg’s skyline, containers, heavenly founding fathers and flamingos. The ‘Andrea Doria’ sails through the painting accompanied by mermaids. Guitars go to Erich Honecker instead of guns. And I myself am relaxing with my hat and cigar in front of the Hotel Atlantic , my home for almost 30 years. You can’t get more Hamburg, more Hapag-Lloyd and more ‘Panic Udo’.”
The new masterpiece replaces a historic oil painting that has adorned Hapag-Lloyd’ main event hall for many decades.
