Setback for larger trucks

[ October 28, 2013   //   ]

The rapporteur on the proposed review of the EU Directive on larger long trucks is reported to be opposed to allowing them to operate across borders, even between countries that permit their use domestically – for example between Sweden and Finland. Leichfried’s draft report on the review of Directive 96/53 is reportedly now with the European Parliament’s Committee on Transport (TRAN) and is due to be presented on 5 November. It would explicitly forbid international circulation for trucks weighing more than 40 tonnes and longer than 18.75 metres, except for purely national operations. Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas had earlier argued that cross-border operation was legal between two countries that both authorise the larger vehicles on their own territory.
