Shipments set to slow, warns Speedy Freight
[ June 23, 2021 // Chris ]Six months on from the end of the transition period between the UK and EU governments, driver shortages remain the single biggest crisis in the haulage industry, says courier, Speedy Freight.
The current shortage, which affects both HGV drivers and drivers of small vans is due many European drivers leaving the country due to the uncertainty over their right to live and work post-Brexit and because it has become common for remaining drivers to prioritise UK based contracts ahead of EU ones, to avoid potential border delays.
According to the Road Haulage Association, this has led to a shortfall of over 65,000 drivers across the UK since January.
Speedy Freight says that clients shipping products of animal origins across the UK/EU border face the longest delays, up to 72-hour delays for some shipments.
