Smart tachos sooner?
[ June 8, 2012 // Chris ]The European Parliament’s Committee on Transport wants to bring forward the date by which all new HGVs must be equipped with a ‘new generation’ or ‘smart’ . A report by Romanian MEP Silvia-Adriana Ticau, adopted on 31 May, called for the device to be adopted around 2017, 24 months after the entry into force of technical specifications that the Commission hopes to adopt by the end of 2014. This would be almost two years before the date proposed by the Council of Ministers. MEPs have also proposed that older trucks devices should be retro-fitted by 2020 at the latest.
The International Road Transport Union (IRU), said this would be neither technically feasible for all vehicles, nor justified and called on MEPs to rethink before their plenary vote, expected in September.
