Southampton upgrades quays for high and heavy trade
[ February 12, 2021 // Chris ]The Port of Southampton is upgrading 430 metres of quayside to support its project cargo and ro ro operations, as well as the new cruise terminal. More than 400 metres of quayside – the length of four football pitches – is being upgraded to reinforce the structure and to incorporate shore power connections for cruise liners.
Included in the work, by Hampshire-based Knights Brown is the installation of 14 new 150-tonne bollards which will enable increased flexibility for positioning large ships and to support high and heavy cargo operations.
Director of ABP Southampton, Alastair Welch, said the upgrade “not only takes us a crucial step closer to the opening of our fifth cruise terminal but also supports our High and Heavy compound.”
