Straddles for Southampton
[ January 14, 2014 // Chris ]DP World Southampton has taken delivery of six new Kalmar straddle-carriers worth over £3.6million as part of a £150m investment by Associated British Ports to prepare for the next generation of ultra large container vessels.
The straddle carriers arrived fully assembled on board the ro-ro vessel MV Meri from Gdynia, Poland, just as work is finishing on the new deep sea container berth at the terminal. They are three-high diesel electric machines with twin lift capability.
Work has also begun on deepening the main approach channel to provide access for ships of 18,000 teu.
