Tesco has launched a new £5m investment programme to move more freight by rail, particularly between the Midlands and North-east England, reports the BusinessGreen website. The investment includes 500 new rail boxes and two new stacking recently unveiled at Tesco's Daventry site. The increased rail service could replace 40 truckloads of road freight between Daventry and Middlesbrough every day.

Container haulier Maritime Transport has been awarded Tesco's Primary Grocery and General Merchandise Haulier of the Year.
The award was in recognition of “the exceptional commitment, enthusiasm shown and high levels of service performance” in delivering internationally-sourced general merchandise products from port to the retailer's distribution centres.
