Trees for tyres and a million mangroves
[ March 21, 2024 // Chris Lewis ]DP World has planted 702 trees as part of an ongoing decarbonisation project with tyre manufacturer Goodyear. The ‘Off the Road’ initiative began in January 2023 and is designed to offset the impact of CO2 emissions by planting two trees for every tyre purchased by DP World Southampton. For the past year, the trees have been planted in Wytham Woods, Oxfordshire, where the reforestation effort has been completed in partnership with Tree-Nation, a non-profit focusing on global reforestation and combating climate change. DP World says the initiative has so far resulted in 121.4 tonnes of CO2 being offset, with the total area of reforested land amounting to 0.35 hectares.
Not to be outdone, airport handling company Menzies Aviation has committed to fund planting of 70,000 mangroves as part of the Million Mangroves project.
Run by Climate Impact Partners, the scheme aims to deliver mangrove restoration to threatened coastal areas around the world including China, Kenya, Indonesia, and Mexico.
Known as ‘the wonder tree,’ mangroves are estimated to store four times more carbon than a rainforest, making them a highly effective natural climate solution.
