Tyne sees another record

The Port of Tyne says it has handled record cargo volumes and turnover for the fifth successive year in 2013. Cargo volumes increased by 25% to 8.1m tonnes, and turnover rose 16% to £73 million compared to 2012. Port of Tyne chief executive officer, Andrew Moffat, said that with 640,000 cars crossing the quays, the port was the UK’s biggest car exporting facility, and it handled over 60,000teu of containers, import and export.

Tyne is the main outlet for the nearby Nissan car plant at Sunderland.
