UPS Camden workers vote to strike
[ November 14, 2013 // Chris ]Unite members at UPS’s Camden, north London depot voted 91% in favour of strike action, paving the way for industrial action in the run-up to Christmas at one of the country’s largest depots – if last minute negotiations fail to bring results. The dispute is over unreasonable workloads, forced overtime and alleged bullying. Unite reps in other depots across London – Barking, Croydon, Dartford and Feltham – have also asked the union to ballot members on the same issues, while the RMT union, which also has members at UPS, is also balloting its members for industrial action.
Unite regional officer Onay Kasab said: “UPS used every trick in the book to try and get our members to vote ‘no’ to a strike.” This included threats of dismissal, along with “breakfasts on selected mornings when the employer wanted to put its propaganda across.”
