UPS opens London Gateway hub

Transport Secretary, Chris Grayling officially opened UPS’s new 32,000sq m package sorting and delivery hub at DP World London Gateway Logistics Park on 14 May.

The £120 million facility, one of UPS’s largest single infrastructure investments outside of the US, will act as a UK package processing hub and distribution centre for the local area as well as a gateway to UPS’s global logistics network, with a capacity of up to 28,000 packages per hour with room for further expansion.

More than 500 employees will work at the five football pitch-sized new hub, which has over four miles of conveyor belts, and with advanced package scanning and sorting equipment.

UPS president for UK, Ireland and Nordics, Mark Vale, said that UK export volume had grown by nearly 20% in 2017 and more than 15% in the first quarter of 2018.

Chris described it as “is a strong vote of confidence in our country’s economic strength and Other recent UPS investments include the announcement of a €130 million facility in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, the opening of an $80 million facility in Bielefeld, Germany, and the construction of a $100 million hub in Evry, France.
