Wales earmarks £40m to safeguard Holyhead’s future

[ October 26, 2023   //   ]

Wales First Minister Mark Drakeford announced a £40m funding to refurbish Holyhead Breakwater and help safeguard the Irish Sea hub’s long-term future.

The 150-year-old, 1.5 mile long structure is gradually being eroded by the Irish Sea.

It is built on rubble foundations which have gradually been eroded by the Irish Sea. The stability of the breakwater is now under threat, with an increasing probability of a breach in the structure occurring during storm conditions.

Holyhead is the busiest UK accompanied  freight ro ro port for the Irish Sea and a key employer on Anglesey, supporting around 700 local jobs.

Head of UK port authorities at Stena Line Ports, Ian Davies, said: “We are seeking to build with our partners Anglesey County Council on the award of Anglesey Freeport status to boost industry and investment in the region, which will serve to support the local and North Wales Economy. The refurbishment of the breakwater and securing the protection of the Port and surrounding area is crucial to that long-term plan and we’re grateful that the Welsh and UK Governments have recognised its importance.”
