Warning: Somali pirates haven’t gone away
[ June 19, 2017 // Chris ]Business security organization Control Risks says there has been an upsurge in piracy off the Horn of Africa, with incidents so far in 2017. Between April and May there were five attempted hijacks of vessels, which included two cargo bulk carriers, a chemical tanker, and a combined chemical and oil tanker. There were also at least eight approaches reported by merchant vessels. Control Risks is reminding vessel operators to take precautions, adding that some of them may have become complacent during the recent lull in piracy. It also warns that there may be another flurry of incidents during the better sea conditions towards the end of the year and beginning of 2018 and that pirates may also move north to the Gulf of Oman, seeking calmer waters.
