Widened Panama Canal to open in June

The widened Panama Canal is set to be officially inaugurated on 26 June. The US$5.2 billion expansion programme, which began in September 2007 will allow vessels of up to around 14,000teu to navigate the canal, compared with 5,000teu currently. The Panama Canal Authority says that the project is now 97% complete, with final testing ahead of the opening of the expanded Panama Canal expected to be completed in the coming weeks.
